Company History

Steam Sweepers Rug Cleaning was established in 1996 by founder, Art Thomas. For nearly 30 years, oriental rug washing and restoration has been our passion. We have mastered the art of cold-water immersion washing, a centuries old process that has allowed us to deeply clean and properly restore the thousands of rugs that have passed through our family business.

Being the only Oriental and specialty area rug washing facility north of Seattle, we service Whatcom, Skagit and Island Counties. Although based in Bellingham, WA, we also offer our pickup and delivery services to the surrounding area.

We pride ourselves not only on providing expert rug restoration, but also being a family- operated and local business. After 26 years of owning, operating, and managing Steam Sweepers, Art Thomas is passing the full-time reins to his son, Bryan Thomas. Art will still be active in consulting and overseeing business operations, but also plans to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

Family History & Owner

Many returning customers will recognize Bryan from the years spent working under his dad at Steam Sweepers. Ever since he was young, he has been learning and mastering the art of rug cleaning and restoration. Like Art, Bryan has a deep appreciation for the history that each rug and customer has to offer. Whether it be a synthetic woven shag rug from Costco or a very fine high end 100-year-old Persian rug, each rug has a story and requires specialized care and treatment.

Bryan grew up in the Bellingham area and graduated from Western Washington University. He recognizes the importance that small local businesses, like Steam Sweepers, have in the community. Bryan especially values the interactions that he gets to have with each customer. Whether greeting you at the shop, providing an estimate, dropping off during a delivery, or following up with a phone call, Bryan is involved with each customer interaction.

Outside of work, Bryan enjoys the outdoors. Whether it's camping up highway 20 or just being out in the garden. You might also find him working on his golf swing at some of the local courses.

So glad that I found Steam Sweepers in Bellingham, WA. I brought in a beloved Turkish wool rug that had been stored in my shed for years and was showing signs of mold and dry rot. Transparent I needed a small woven rug that had been hanging in a bathroom to be sanitized and to have odors removed. At the business you can watch the cleaning process in action. In addition, the business wanted me to know beforehand about potential hazards of cleaning such as color drift or warping. In the end, the wool rug was color-fast and no further warping occurred due to washing, however the sanitation process did not remove all of the odors.

I used to have to take my rugs near the Ballard Bridge to get them dry-cleaned, which is a long way from Anacortes. Steam Sweepers are very fast and efficient for them to be picking the items up and bringing them back. This is our second time using them and the service was good, and the rug is nice and clean. I am happy they are here in the area, so I don't have to go so far away. It was nice to pay them $25.00 for them to pick up. It was worth it for them to have a reasonable fee to pick it up and bring it back.

I have used Steam Sweepers LLC for well over 10 years, and they do an excellent job for me. The last time that I used them, it was for a particularly difficult group of carpet. We have a large contemporary wool rug. Light on color and had many coffee spills. Bryan and his team are amazing! Kind, very knowledgeable, excellent communication and customer service. We will bring all our carpets here! I thought customer service was extinct, it is not!!!

My mother's hand knotted antique carpets had gotten moths, and Bryan did an extremely kind and sensitive job of helping me figure out which ones could be kept. He was so patient while I worked through some feelings. (Mom is deceased.) The rugs he cleaned came out beautifully, and will be safe from moths in the future. They will not put my own carpets and wool clothing at risk either. We are repeat customers. We are so lucky in Bellingham to have them here!

Coffee with cream on my beautiful wool area rug. Tried to remove it multiple times only to cause more damage. Dropped my rug off, Bryan explained the process and shared that my attempts to remove the stain may have damaged the backing.

Not only did we wash each rug with our specialized cold-water immersion technique, but we also carefully prepared the rugs for storage. Tony's rug collection was unfortunately affected by Bellingham flood waters. Thankfully, we were able to get to all 31 rugs quickly after Tony used our emergency rug pick up service. We were able to properly remove all excess water before washing and treating each rug with moth prevention. After a quick turnaround time, we are able to conveniently deliver clean and dry rugs back to Tony. It is crucial that rugs are removed from flood waters as soon as possible to prevent any warping or other water damage. We are happy to have saved Tony's rug collection by acting quickly!
