Sealing grout lines is important, because grout is porous and if not protected with a good sealer, spills can leave stains. While it is not recommended to seal ceramic tile surfaces the grout line should definitely be sealed.
Sealing Natural Stone Tile and Grout
Most natural stone tiles and slabs should be sealed; this can protect the stone from permanent discoloration caused by spills. Natural stone is porous and will accept an impregnating (penetrating) sealer that will seep into the pores and protect it from permanent staining and discoloration. The sealer bonds to the grout and stone so that wet stains will resist penetrating below the surface, thus providing you with ample time to wipe the spill away.
